First of all, please do not show up by yourself to help. Join an organization that is experienced in disaster relief, such as Red Cross. They can help give you training. My understanding is, disaster relief is very hard work. People are overwhelmed, distressed, and sometimes recently bereaved of loved ones.
Also if you're a recent victim of Katrina, please do not fight over food and other goods, or loot, or get violent. Help anybody in need. What you give you will get. The ones you help could be Angels in disguise.
