Hey, all,
I've been compiling a pretty long list of people and their whereabouts over the past several days. It's mostly 9th Ward circus kids, Nowe Miasto folks and their respective networks of friends and cohorts.

The name at the end of each entry, where is says "via so-and-so", is the person who gave me the information. If anyone wants contact info to follow up on people's whereabouts, write to me directly and I'll send it to you.

the Los Angeles Animal Rescue groups have been bringing found pets form the hurricane zone back to Califronia for Foster care. If you are looking for your pet, every pet is being tagged and photograghed for PETFINDERS.
I apologize that I do not know if it is Pet Finders .org or .com (I just handle the pets themselves then we receive a truckload)
But people should know that several hundred pets have arrived here and are waiting to be sent home.

Dear Fellow Burners -

Tom Price, Press Information Officer at BM, has asked me to help collect information on Burner-related Katrina relief efforts nationwide.

I have created a Yahoo Group that will allow regional and “on the ground” burners share information about their work. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BM_Katrina

Please feel free to post any relevant information, photos, blogs…

The Burning Man “Temple to Temple” crew are already in Biloxi, MS

Matt Lindsay (a heavy equipment wrangler for David Best's Temple crew since 2000) and friends are in Biloxi, MS with several tons of heavy equipment and nine generators. They are working with Oxfam and World Shelters http://www.worldshelters.com to set up temporary shelter for thousands of displaced people.

“Temple to Temple” has set up shop in the leveled Chau Van Duc Buddhist Temple in east Biloxi, and have successfully established a 24-hour free supermarket in a 44-foot dome donated by Pacific Domes http://www.pacificdomes.com, in an effort to aid the neglected Vietnamese community still living there.

CURRENT NEEDS:

*WORKERS! to come help CLEAR DEBRIS and to help get the community back together.
*MONEY for GAS to run their GENERATORS, and buy more DOMES to house people in!

BURNING MAN REPORTS FROM BILOXI, MS!

Tom Price aka "Thumper" is now in Biloxi, MS with the "Temple to Temple" Crew.
His reports from the field can be found at:
http://www.burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/misc/katrina_thumper.html

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHOW UP IN BILOXI AND HELP, please call Tom Price on his cell phone at 801-712-5371 for instructions. The circuits are loaded, and sometimes sketchy, but keep trying.

If you'd like to donate cash, you can do so immediately by making a payment to Tom's PayPal account, which is the email address: price_tom@ hotmail.com.
He will ATM the money out and immediately put it towards the continuation of the operation

Other “Temple to Temple” contacts for information on donations and volunteering are Shelly Lindsay at 541-482-7288 and Melissa Bond: melissabond006@yahoo.com

You can also contact the Burning Man Staff directly at katrina-relief@burningman.com

http://burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/misc/katrina.

Please try and spread the word to other Burners.

BURNERS - POST YOUR LINKS to Burner-sponsored Responses to KATRINA!

Dear Fellow Burners -

I've been tasked by a member of the BM staff to collect as much info on Katrina-related Burner activities nationwide (or even international) as possible!

Although it is NOT an OFFICIAL BM site, I've set up a Yahoo Group to help me in this purpose. If I haven't found you, perhaps at least you can find me. The address is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BM_Katrina/

The idea is to have a CENTRAL place for people to post all "Burner-Organized" activities that are happening in response to this catastrophe....This includes first aid, alternative healers, performers, temporary shelters, & even loners who have just struck out on their own with provisions....ANYTHING!

If you've already established your own tribe or website, please leave a LINK on the yahoo group so that other Burners who want to help can find you!

The goal is to widen the communication nationwide among Burners, so we can continue to mobilize the best response.

I do know that there is already a lot of Burner activity from people who left directly from the Playa to the Gulf Coast, some taking the heavy equipment that they brought to the desert.

I also know that the Burners who set up the Temple each year have already set up a Free Community Grocery Store in Biloxi, MS which apparently has a large, Vietnamese community there that has largely been neglected, and they are truly appreciated and needed.

Another major BM goal right now is to help set up as much temporary shelter as possible for the some of the hundreds of thousands of people still in shelters, at least giving them a minimum of privacy comfort.

Therefore, I am encouraging ALL Burners to post as much info as possible to the YAHOO GROUP. (Unfortunately, Tribe.net currently doesn't offer the amount of organizational flexibility and Options as Yahoo does.)

As I mentioned earlier, this is not the OFFICIAL BM site in response to Katrina, although I do know that there is one in the works.

I also will be working full time to post as many links (including relevant tribes) and as much information as I can to this web address.

The point is for us to develop a centralized source of information for, by and and about Burners who are responding to Katrina.

Again, the web address is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BM_Katrina/

As it currently stands, ANYONE who becomes a member of the group can post LINKS, PHOTOS, DOCUMENTS and other information on Burner-related Katrina responses.

In this way, people who want to get involved will have an effective way to tap into a network of other Burners who are already on the move!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Christine Ogu

For the Sacramento Sierra area.

WHAT IS THE AMERICAN REDCROSS DOING TO HELP VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA?

Since the disaster hit, the American Red Cross has been on the scene to help victims. To Date we have opened more than 902 Red Cross shelters in 24 states that have housed more than 204,270 people, and we have served more than 11 million hot meals. Currently we are making it possible for 140,374 people who are running out of personal resources to remain in hotels in 46 states. The American Red Cross has mobilized its nationwide network of more than 850 chapters to support this effort. More than 122,000 disaster relief workers from 50 states, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C. and the Virgin Islands are supporting this unprecedented relief operation. The American Red Cross is currently undergoing a massive mobilization effort to deploy existing Red Cross volunteers and train new ones for future deployment. For more information on this effort, please visit www.sacsierraredcross.org.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Our major need right now is financial contributions. We expect this to be one of the most expensive disasters in American Red Cross history, and we need the support of the American people to provide Red Cross relief to victims. You can make a donation online at www.sacsierraredcross.org, via phone at 1-800-HELP NOW or by mail with a check made out to “American Red Cross,” 8928 Volunteer Lane, Ste. #100, Sacramento, CA 95826.

WHO SHOULD I CALL TO DO A FUNDRAISER?

Thank you for your interest. Our fund development department is coordinating all outside fundraisers. To get information on picking up donation cans or other fundraising activities, please contact that department directly at (916) 368-3123 or use our chapter main number (916)368-3131.

HOW CAN I MAKE SURE MY DONATION IS SPENT ON KATRINA?

Contributions to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund are best, because they allow us to spend money where it is needed most as new disasters occur. However, if you put “Hurricane Katrina” in the memo line of your check, we will ensure it is spent on this specific relief operation. We are committed to honoring the intent of our donors, so if you prefer to designate your contribution for a specific purpose, please be sure to let us know!

ARE YOU TAKING DONATIONS OF ITEMS?

Thank you for your inquiry. While we appreciate your desire to help, the American Red Cross is not able to accept donations of physical items like clothing, blankets or food. We have found that the cost to collect, ship and warehouse these items often outweighs the value of the items themselves. Financial donations are best because they allow us to purchase EXACTLY what’s needed and get it to people quickly. We try to make these purchases as close to the affected region as possible, so there’s the added benefit of injecting money into the disaster-affected economy.

The American Red Cross is not taking donations of medical supplies or medications either prescription or over the counter. These supplies are best donated to organizations that have a mission of medical relief.

I WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER IN THE LOCAL OFFICE (SACRAMENTO, AUBURN, PLACERVILLE, SONORA). HOW DO I DO THAT?

The Sacramento Sierra chapter is still in need of volunteers to work in their local offices. These volunteers are needed to help with administrative support like answering phones, data entry or various other duties in our fund development department. If you are interested in helping locally in either, Sacramento, Auburn, Placerville or Sonora, please call the Sacramento Sierra Chapter at 916-368-3131.

ARE YOU RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS TO BE DEPLOYED TO EVACUATION SHELTERS?

We are actively recruiting volunteers to be deployed to the effected region. To do this, you must be in good health with no mobility limitations, and you must be able to commit to traveling on a “hardship” assignment (sleeping on a cot, with limited access to showers) for three weeks. As of right now, shelters have adequate staffing to support their mission. It is when these volunteers are finished with their assignments, which ranges anywhere from 10 to 21 days, that more volunteers will be needed to replace them. Also, please keep in mind, that this relief operation will last anywhere from six to 12 months. For more information on volunteer needs, please visit www.sacsierraredcross.org.

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS DISASTER RELIEF OPERATION FROM THE SACRAMENTO SIERRA CHAPTER?

Since Saturday the 27th of August our chapter has deployed 366 volunteers. We are looking forward to training and processing more volunteers in the future.

WHY IS DEPLOYMENT TAKING SO LONG?

We are currently deploying trained people to support the disaster relief effort for hurricane Katrina.
Our deployment numbers are at the request of our Service Area. When our Service Center sends our chapter a request for numbers of trained people to be deployed, our chapter then starts the process of finding volunteers with availabilities to match. Please keep in mind that this will be a long disaster relief operation, one that will possibly last from six months to a year.

ARE YOU GOING TO BE HAVING MORE TRAINING CLASSES?

We will be having more training classes in the days to come. Please keep in mind that this is a “hardship” assignment (sleeping on a cot, with limited access to showers) for three weeks. To be deployed to help, you need to have taken our training and must be in good health with no mobility limitations. The American Red Cross is currently staffed for the shelters that are open. It is when these volunteers are finished with their assignments, which ranges anywhere from 10 to 21 days, that more volunteers will be needed to replace them. Also, please keep in mind, that this relief operation will last anywhere from six to 12 months.
Please monitor www.sacsierraredcross.org for updates on dates and times.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH EVACUEES FROM THE HURRICANE KATRINA DISASTER AREA?

Any individuals/families that are self-evacuating to the Sacramento Area are eligible for services through the American Red Cross. The Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross is operating a service center in the Sacramento office. This is for the registration and assessment of self-evacuees. In order to receive services, self-evacuees, upon arrival to the Sacramento area, need to contact the Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross by phone at (916) 368-3131 or in person at 8928 Volunteer Lane, Sacramento. Please note that the service center hours vary from day to day . Please call to check on hours.

For people who are unable to visit a local chapter, the American Red Cross has opened up a call center. This center will interview and aid evacuees with the same guidelines as a chapter service center. The call center number is
1-800-975-7585. Please be aware that this number is very impacted and to please be patient with the process.

I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY HOME TO DISPLACED EVACUEES, HOW DO I DO THAT?

Thank you for your generous offer to house evacuees displaced by hurricane Katrina. The American Red Cross
does not match evacuees with host families in unaffected areas. Please visit either www.sac.sheriff.com, or your local Salvation Army (Sacramento, 916-563-3700). These organizations are processing of this type of donation.

HOW DO I HELP WITH LOCAL EVACUATION SHELTERS?

It is unclear at this time if an evacuation shelter for hurricane Katrina evacuees will be located in our area.
If you want to participate in a local shelter, if one is located here, you will need to take the same 9 hour training class. We will be having more training classes in the days to come. Please monitor www.sacsierraredcross.org for updates on dates and times.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT A LOVED ONE IN THE HURRICANE-AFFECTED REGION?

The American Red Cross has launched a website to help assist family members who are seeking news about loved ones living in the path of Hurricane Katrina.

•	If you have internet access, please visit the “Family Links Registry” via www.redcross.org to register yourself, a missing relative or view the existing list of registrants.

•	Due to the extent of the damage and the number of people displaced, concerned friends and family members are encouraged to visit this site daily to consult the list, as it will be updated continuously.

•	Those who do not have access should call our toll-free hotline 1-877-LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317)

I AM HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY CLIENT ASSISTANCE CARD (CAC).

If you are a hurricane Katrina evacuee and are having trouble with your:

* US Bank VISA Client Assistance Card that was issued to you at the Sacramento Sierra Red Cross., please call US Bank customer service at 1-877-693-2899.

* Red Cross CAC card, please come by the Red Cross office for assistance.
Please call 916-368-3131 to check the service center hours.

Books for Katrina Survivors

Donate Your Books to Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

With this program, not only will books go directly to the people affected by hurricane Katrina, but givers & recipients can also connect through our partner, BookCrossing. It is our hope that many survivors who receive the books will, some time after settling into their new lives, login to BookCrossing and make notes on the books they received as well as comments to those who sent the books. It's a chance for the world to come together!

It's a great way for even those with little money to help, for children to help other children!

Our immediate goal is to help survivors heal & move on with their lives in the immediate aftermath of this storm. However, our commitment is a continuing one. Once evacuees return to their homes &/or establish new homes, we'd also like to maintain the book donation program to help rebuild the damaged & lost school and public libraries. If you know someone who can help, or are interested in being a part of this long term effort, please contact us!

Hi folks,

The following is passed along with permission. Please pass it along as you feel is appropriate. FYI, Ted has been friend of mine for years and I totally vouch for him.

Best regards to all,

Jay Wiseman

xxxxxxxxxxxxx

It is my pleasure to announce the following first donations to the Leather Fund.

New England Leather Alliance has donated $1000 and has earmarked further activities at the next Fetish Fleamarket for the Leather Fund.

International Ms Leather 2005, Jessi HolmanAhart, and FIST have raised and donated $500 dollars for the Leather Fund. Fist is a women's leather club from the Baltimore/Washington, DC area.

I want to offer my thanks and the thanks of the Leather Community for their generosity.

If your community has funds to donate, or would like to plan a fundraiser for the Leather Fund, please contact:

Ted Carter at mstersade@aol.com

Travis Wilson at travisw@pdq.net

DomLeo at domleo@austin.rr.com

The Leather Fund is being established as a Louisiana nonprofit corporation with the purpose of meeting the long term rebuilding and restablishment needs of the Leather Community affected by Hurricane Katrina. As a goal the Leather Fund has set a minimum level of $200,000 in resources. It is believed that out of tragedy often comes benefit and it is hoped by those that are establishing this fund that the fund will be there not only for this disaster, but for whatever future disasters may strike our community.

If a need in our community is not being met, if assistance is needed immediately for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact one of the above.

Please feel free to post this email to any list or any individual that you wish to.

Thank you.

Diesel Fuel Needed for Farmers in S. MS and LA

Diesel fuel is desparately needed in farming communities. While it is certainly right that people be cared for first, another tragedy is happening on the farms of south Mississippi and Louisiana. Many of them raise poultry and dairy animals, and are heavily dependent on electrical power to run ventilation fans, milking machines, milk cooling tanks, and feed processing equipment.

While most forms of communication are down, I managed to talk to my cousin Jene in Tylertown and he said the lack of fuel will soon contribute to more serious economic damage.

My family was thinking of trying to get a flatbed truck full of gas in drums from Houston to MS. Anyone think this is even feasible yet? I don't wanna go down there to end up as part of the problem.

Thanks to Joe Keady aka Joe Tuba & Michele Hardesty
contact Joe for further info joseph_k@riseup.net

Hi,
Below is the most up-to-date list I have. Please do forward it to anyone you
think should see it - just keep in mind that some of this info is a good week
A couple of sites worth keeping up on:

http://www.NewOrleansNetwork.org

This site will be a crucial part of keeping New Orleans evacuee communities
connected, informed, and involved in re-building a great city even better,
FOR EVERYONE.

But, for this to happen we need everyone to do a couple things:

First, take 5 minutes, RIGHT NOW, to go to
http://www.NewOrleansNetwork.org and

* Log In - create a user name and password for yourself

Fraudulent Donation Sites

This is from an article in the New York Times. There's lots of great grassroots organizations to give money to, but please don't give to InternetDonations.org, KatrinaFamilies.com, Katrina-Donations.com or NewOrleansCharities.com. Read on.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/07/national/nationalspecial/07cnd-fraud.html?hp&ex=1126152000&en=4b4e5e934468535c&ei=5094&partner=homepage

The Missouri attorney general, Jay Nixon, filed a lawsuit this afternoon against InternetDonations.org, the hub for a constellation of Web sites erected over the last several days purporting to collect donations for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Also named in the lawsuit, Mr. Nixon said, is the apparent operator of the donation sites, Frank Weltner, a St. Louis resident and radio talk show personality with ties to neo-Nazi organizations and the notorious Web site JewWatch.com.

The Missouri lawsuit seeks to freeze the assets of Internet Donations Inc., a nonprofit entity registered with the Missouri secretary of state's office by Mr. Weltner on Sept. 2, and to shut down the dozen or so Web sites with names like KatrinaFamilies.com, Katrina-Donations.com and NewOrleansCharities.com. Those sites appear to have been hastily registered and mounted since Hurricane Katrina devastated large swaths of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi last week.

I have DirecTV, and noticed last night that Channel 100 has been devoted to Katrina resources. I watched for a few minutes, and it's very specific local information -- things like lists of open shelters in Biloxi. There's also a scrolling ticker on the bottom that shows you various Katrina-related news bits.

Please dont donate to Red Cross!

This is just word of mouth. However what I've heard is that the red cross doesn't put the money all into the survivors they mostly keep it for themselves. Please do some serious research if you plan on donating to them, because I believe it to be just a big scam.

Sponsored by: NAPSTER | SOCAL-BREAKS | L.A.B.A. | THE MOR BAR

Hello All,

We've seen the destruction and the immense need of the people affected by the hurricane as well as the flooding in New Orleans. I believe there is no need to try to convince anyone how dire the situation is for so many there. In order to help do our part with whatever tools we have at our disposal, this week The Crystal Method, Simply Jeff, and all the Boom Box residents (RobTronik, Oscure, Ooah) are coming together to have a benefit show. Also, my employer Napster is coming to the table to give out shirts and cool stuff to those that come that night! Many thanks to the Mor Bar, Michael Hart, and the staff there for their ongoing support as well.

This Thursday all proceeds from the show will go to the American Red Cross. This is a good chance to pool our resources together and celebrate music, life, and each other, while also raising a significant amount of money (hopefully!) to help those in dire need.

So, please share this email and spread the word! Be there early and come be part of the breakbeat community while we celebrate life, raise money, and hopefully make some positive difference in the catastrophe that has just occured.

Peace and hopeful vibes,

As a former Texan (Austin) I'm sure Dallas will give Katrina survivors a warm welcome.

WWOZ - the heart of New Orleans - is broadcasting in exile now at www.wwoz.com.

On that site, there are links to places where you can donate to help the musicians who have lost their instruments, their homes, their muse in many different ways.

Also, the website directs you to the Tipitina's Foundation - www.tipsevents.com/foundati...efault.asp.

Buy New Orleans music - call your local clubs, concert promoters, record store owners and have them book Nola bands. If they don't know which bands are from New Orleans, direct them to www.louisianamusicfactory.com or www.wwoz.com.

I want to see a New Orleans cultural diaspora.

Katrina Data Project (data consolidation)

http://www.katrinadataproject.com/

I would like to take up some forum space to get this message out. I am working with a group in Atlanta who is putting forth an effort to consolidate as much of the assorted databases and forums that have sprung up to help families find missing members. Believe me there are a lot out there and everyone is making such a huge effort to help. As more and more databases and forums spring up the information overload is getting tremendous.

Hopefully we will be able to work together to aid these people and a central data location would be the best solution.

If you have access and authority to send data all of the information can be found at the above site.

There are actually two services being offered, the first is collecting and consolidating data from outside sources and the other is data collection.

If anyone has a web space available, we have some banners for folks to place on their pages. Every little bit helps. There are two sets of banners for both projects.

http://www.mamaloca.net/lostandfound/banner.htm

Thanks so much for everyone's help, and Hurculean efforts to help the hurricane survivors. Every little bit helps.

Thanks for listening

If you've already given to the Red Cross, THANK YOU! If you still plan to give, reports are in of problems with Red Cross aid to Katrina survivors:
Petition for NOLA

To: US Congress

When Iraq was destroyed the rebuilding contracts went to American companies such as Kellog Brown and Root and Halliburton taking all that profit out of the hands of Iraqis and giving it to Bush cronies.

New Orleans is going to be rebuilt. ALL of that work should go to local New Orleans people. New Orleans people need work. New Orleans people need thier beloved city to rise again. New Orleans and the rest of us need New Orleans to be the multicultural gumbo at it's full glory again. All the materials where possible should be bought from New Orleans and Louisianna business people, from local sustainable local resources. All supply and subcontract orders should go to the people of Louisianna. If the local ecomony of our beloved New Orleans is going to recover it is going to be because NOLA rebuilds herself...not because contracts go to outside contractors from far away who benefit from thier relationship to the Bush administration. New Orleans without it's residents is a Disneyland for the rich. Instead we need a WPA project making it possible for NOLA residents to rebuild thier own town.

New Orleans is the soul of America. Without it's residents it has no soul.

Save the soul of America... support NOLA residents in moving home and rebuilding thier own beloved hometowm with our help, with our money and support.

Federal monies must be made available to follow through on the subsidence mediation, levee and channel projects. Where large outside contractors are ABSOLUTELY nessesary they MUST hire and TRAIN local residents to do the work and get paid for that work.

Cronyism killed New Orleans, by putting a man with O DISASTER RECOVERY experience in charge of the effort. Localism will save it. The people of NOLA will save it.

STOP IT BEFORE CRONYISM BURIES HER.

Thank you please pass this on!

Sincerely,

A little helpful info for people who have been trying to call loved ones:

I've heard that text messaging is a good way to communicate with people in the storm area because you are not actually clogging up traditional phone lines that way. That is of course, someone has a car charger for their phone.

Give it a try, good luck to all.

First of all, please do not show up by yourself to help. Join an organization that is experienced in disaster relief, such as Red Cross. They can help give you training. My understanding is, disaster relief is very hard work. People are overwhelmed, distressed, and sometimes recently bereaved of loved ones.
Also if you're a recent victim of Katrina, please do not fight over food and other goods, or loot, or get violent. Help anybody in need. What you give you will get. The ones you help could be Angels in disguise.

Business As Usual

Michael Albert

The growing outrage over the willful ignoring of warnings and overt
cutting of local expenditures that paved the way for New Orleans'
disaster is of course valid. The growing outrage over the unavailability
of resources spent on immoral imperial violence is also valid. Corpses
floating by warrant both tears and recrimination, but I want to address
something slightly different.

Set aside the past history leading to New Orleans' vulnerability. Set
aside the early warnings ignored. Set aside the National Guard sent to
Iraq. The storm hit. Those with means to flee and somewhere to go got
out. Levies burst (or, more accurately, succumbed to insane neglect).
Waters rose. People lost food, medicine, information, and, yes, for a
few, access to addictive drugs.

So what then? I am no city planner. But a few possibilities cross my
mind.

Why not issue an order to bus companies to curtail transport elsewhere
in the south and send all those busses, and certainly not too few, to
New Orleans and the Mississippi coast to extract those who wished to
leave.

Why not send in food, water, medicine, and yes, perhaps even drugs to
appease desperate habits, to be distributed from sites all over the
afflicted area, as well as dispersed to those who couldn't gain access
to distribution points.

Why not issue an order to the military at bases across the south to send
in troops to provide relief, including rescuing people, taking people
out, distributing needed supplies, and, as a sidebar, helping keep
order.

But where will people who leave stay? How will people escape the
blistering heat and rising tides?

Why not issue an order to hotels to open their doors in surrounding
areas free from the floods and power outages. The busses then wouldn't
have to drive people hundreds or even thousands of miles. There would be
no need to put people in vast stadiums with no privacy, amenities, or
security, producing still more suffering. The hotels would be easy
destinations to deliver food, medicine, and other necessities like
clothing, diapers, soap, and radios to, the last so that people could
hear Bush taking credit for issuing executive orders to save their lives
and comfort them for bearing the burden of climate warming gone amuck.

No doubt you can think up better possibilities. Surely mayors and
governors and heads of big corporations, or their advisers, or many news
commentators, could think up good options too.

In other words, even given the grotesque unpreparedness of New Orleans
and the Mississippi coast, even given the unending misallocations of
resources to immoral war, still, once people were clinging to roofs,
once people were wading though chest deep tides, once people were
enduring blistering sun, once people were parched, hungry, without
clothes, without medicine - why did we do so little?

Well, first, it isn't we who did so little. Normal people were
immediately horrified. Normal people, particularly in the area,
immediately tried to help. Despite being inundated daily with media
messages and social situations that arouse antisocial greediness and
egocentrism, the U.S. population still has a beating heart. But
disparate populations have limited options. The "we" who did little or
nothing was not the broad population but the people who had means. The
"we" was the government. So why didn't the government act quicker and
more aggressively?

The answer gaining credence by the hour is that the suffering people
were, and are, black and poor. That is overwhelmingly true and intensely
relevant, particularly to the instant news coverage, to the shoot to
kill rhetoric, to the belief that politicos could ride out being
callous, and to the endless indignities imposed at the gathering places
where acres of hungry, disheveled blacks are harassed by surrounding
police forces - not to mention to the prior history of New Orleans. But
however central racism has been, it is not the whole story.

The additional factor making things much worse than nature imposed, I
think, is that government intervention on behalf of humanity violates
the logic and philosophy of business as usual.

Yes, the Bush administration worships market fundamentalism beyond all
reason which makes them even more guilty than a Kerry or Gore regime,
which would not have so drastically cut security measures for New
Orleans, a hub city of the U.S. and world economy, and might have signed
the Kyoto Accords, paying more attention to global warming, a likely
cause of growing hurricane severity.

But even if Kerry or Gore wouldn't have done as badly before the fact as
Bush, nonetheless, if the storm had hit head on, Kerry or Gore in office
would have faced a situation little different from what we see now.
Kerry would have put on a more sincere looking smiling face, no doubt.
Gore would have delivered more caring and coherent homilies, I bet.
Kerry would have set down the plane and rolled up his sleeves to hand
out water bottles to suffering crowds - can't you just see him in your
mind's eye? But neither Kerry nor Gore would have issued orders to bus
companies, hotels, and pharmaceutical, food, and water providers to
immediately aggressively alleviate people's suffering. Why not?

For Kerry and Gore, as for Bush, to issue such directives would
challenge the private pursuit of profits.

But, you say, this is a calamity. Bush could interfere as an emergency
act and could then soak up gigantic public thanks and avoid the gigantic
public recrimination he is now suffering. Even if Bush doesn't give a
damn about the people who are suffering, how could that not be better
for his stature and even for his market fundamentalist agenda?

The answer is, I think, while such a choice would be in elites'
short-term interest, it would not be in their interest over the long
haul. Over the long haul, it would be okay for elites to volunteer aid,
yes, though incredibly few seem to be doing so, but the government
telling private corporations that they must serve human need at the
expense of private profit is unacceptable because, heaven forbid, it
might cause too many people to perceive the obvious.

If homelessness after a hurricane should be solved by government fiat
against market mayhem making things worse, why not solve day to day
homelessness that way, too? Why not solve a crumbling infrastructure
that way? Why not solve 30 or maybe 40 million Americans living below
the poverty line that way? Why not solve literacy rates falling, poverty
climbing, hunger growing, health failing? If rescuing New Orleans after
a (somewhat) natural calamity warrants the government coercing big
business, why not rescuing New Orleans, and other cities too, from the
continuous ravages of corporate greed? Before the water rose, illiteracy
in New Orleans was 40%. How can that be civilized? Why not correct that?
Must we be literally drowning to address grotesque injustice? What if
people started asking questions like these?

Is Bush looking gleefully at the suffering in New Orleans and even
neglectfully adding to it as a psychopathic sadist might? I doubt it.
Rather, Bush worries about tomorrow, not about tomorrow's ecology, mind
you, or its climate, but about tomorrow's sociology. Bush ignores
prognostications of natural calamity but listens very hard for the
possibilities of social calamity. Retaining corporate power and profit
is Bush's reason for being. Maintaining subordination of the many to the
few is his business as usual. Cheney is probably lining up construction
contracts.

That's the subtext of Katrina and New Orleans. That's why Bush and Co.
reflexively marched lock step into incredible callousness. Accept
business as usual as priority one and all that's left is different
brands of callousness. And then Bush's media spinners have to sell
Bush's callousness. So like rabid sociopaths they try what often works,
being tough - "shoot the looters to kill" they bluster. Shoot people who
are taking food and water and sharing it with those too old or too young
to loot for themselves. Shoot the sick seeking medicine to survive.
Shoot, shoot, shoot. Don't distribute what's needed, heaven forbid.
Defend empty stores. Defend empty hotels. Who cares about the living,
after all, a lot of them will soon be dead and the rest silent.

Just to clarify the point, for those who take seriously the admonition
to shoot the looters to kill - the main looters in our society are
corporate owners who accrue the products of working people's labor. The
shooting gallery, if fulfilling this instruction were to become popular,
would be far more upscale than the swamp that is New Orleans.

Bush has bloody hands, but beyond Bush, the larger system of business as
usual guaranteed a catastrophic response to this catastrophe. The
accurate Katrina headline is: Storm Hits, Capitalism Preserves Profits,
Humanity Drowns.

How about a Katrina meta search engine, where people who are looking for missing persons could search from ONE site/meta search engine over all existing lists/databases?
So they could find people faster?
Something like "Katrina meta crawler"? It's just an idea.

For several years now, Modest Needs has been assisting people in short term financial crisis who don't qualify for help from government or other non-profits. It's a fabulous organization created and run with integrity by one guy. He has set up a special Katrina relief fund with the goal of assisting folks who have already evacuated, and folks who were not affected but have opened their homes to victims.

If you donate, your money will be well spent. If you qualify under the categories listed above, then make a request for assistance.

My Dad and his wife live in Gulfport - When I read the news and saw the photos Tuesday morning of what the scale of damages has been to that city, I didn't have much hope for things - For three days I waited for word from my Dad - Efforts to reach him at his home phone number were in vain: either the phone lines were down or the lines were jammed with too many people trying to get through to the area

Thursday night I tried calling him again, and he answered! He and his wife were in a shelter for three days, with no way of contacting family - They left the shelter to return to see what was left of their home and miraculously it is still standing, with only minor damages - Everything inside was intact - And they live in a trailer home! - I never held out hope for them still having a home after what I saw was done to great buildings and casinos - Of course, they may be among a small and fortunate minority, but what I mean to say is: Don't despair, if you have loved ones in the disaster zone and are still waiting for word - The news coverage paints a very bleak picture but there are areas that have been spared destruction, and the residents did receive ample warning to evacuate and so most of them did - Keep praying, and keep trying to phone!

I give thanks that all is well in New Orleans, Louisiana, Florida, Texas, and thereabouts. Everybody is calm, orderly, helpful, and courteous. Nobody is looting, or hurting, or sexually violating people. Nobody is going to use guns or other weapons. Everybody is being taken care of with enough food, water, childcare, diapers and food for babies and small tots. All the dead bodies are being properly buried or otherwise taken care of, in order to promote health and prevent disease. Yes, that includes household pets. All the dogs, cats, and other pets, stray or not, are being taken care of. There is more than sufficient money, time, energy, wisdom, and helpful, brave, hard-working people working to aid everybody affected by this. Somehow we're going to get the Federal Government to be much more helpful! Everybody is learning from this not to neglect our own backyard in order to tell other gardeners worldwide where to plant their tomatoes and cucumbers!
The above is a prayer and positive affirmation composed by me. We give thanks to God. So be it! All is well.

Let's keep this tribe a clearinghouse for immediately useful information. I have my own opinions about the way the situation has been handled, but in the interests of helping those in need, please post requests and suggestions only.

(And don't let me stop you from starting a tribe for viewpoints on the recovery efforts, funding, political agendas, etc.)
